The makers of the game thought that to be complete that far, you should at least be on a certain level, and people were on much lower levels than they thought. There was a time when people were completing rooms as far as their level status would allow, without actually playing that often. As far as I can tell, the ONLY reason people get so up in the air about them is because they have to actually play the game now. This isn't anywhere near as bad as players make it out to be. The main change they made, that has had the biggest impact on players is the introduction of the non giftable items. But things change and you just have to move on with them. I use the term problems lightly, because the problems are not with the game. The business behind the game was sold to a casino and that is when all the "problems" started.
